At Magic|Bar, bartender/magician extraordinaire Benjamin Schrader’s weekly Monday pop-up sleight-of-hand saloon, the magic is intimate and happens just a few feet away, making each card trick all the more impressive. A dozen lucky patrons sip specially crafted cocktails and have their minds blown by a rotating roster of guest performers, all of whom, also are headlining magicians at the Magic Castle.
Once the wooden doors of Magic|Bar slide shut, a small group of wonder-seekers bond over shared moments of amazement. Old jazz records spin on a turntable. Decks are cut. Booze is imbibed. And poof! Just like that, at least for an hour or so, the outside world disappears.
“A magician extraordinaire, sleight of hand saloon”
“If you’re tired of looking for a member to get you into the Magic Castle, this weekly LA pop-up is the next best thing. In fact, the intimate show is even better, if you ask us”
“Old-timey jazz drifts from a record player, candles drip wax over shelves in the corners, and for an hour, it’s unclear whether the more exciting escapism is the Houdini-inspired evasion tricks or your hourlong disconnect from the outside world.”
“Once the wooden doors of Magic Bar slide shut, a small group of wonder-seekers bond over shared moments of amazement. Old jazz records spin on a turntable. Decks are cut. Booze is imbibed. And poof! Just like that, at least for an hour or so, the outside world disappears.”

New York Times critic Ben Brantley calls The Ferryman "fiercely gripping" and "the Broadway production of the year," while the Chicago Tribune dubs it "a sprawling, Shakespearean masterpiece." Written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Oscar and Tony Award-winner Sam Mendes, this “new, instant and monumental classic” (HuffPost) has been ranked on more Top 10 lists than any other show. It's 1981 in Northern Ireland, and the Carney farmhouse is a hive of activity with preparations for the annual harvest. A day of hard work on the land and a traditional night of feasting and celebrations lie ahead. But this year they'll be interrupted by a visitor. The Hollywood Reporter says, “This crackling thriller positively thrums with life and love. It will leave you breathless," and the stellar ensemble cast is set to include Brian d'Arcy James, Emily Bergl, Shuler Hensley, Fionnula Flanagan (through April 14th) and Blair Brown (beginning April 16th), among many more. Catch The Ferryman at Jacobs Theatre in New York City.

Ella Hickson, a young playwright making waves in the U.K., tackles big ideas of feminism, imperialism and environmentalism in this genre-busting tale that makes its American premiere at Olney Theatre Center.

Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. Beloved for penning such iconic pop classics as "You've Got a Friend" and "I Feel the Earth Move," she fought her way into the record business as a teenager and ultimately flourished, writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. Beautiful is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. See this unforgettable show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City.

Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse becomes the “wooden O” as Prince Hal accepts his call to the throne, becoming King Henry V. After making a claim on the French throne, Henry leads his fellow Englishmen into battle to recover territories from the French. In a rallying cry on St. Crispin’s Day, Henry calls on his men to fight for “God, Harry, England, and St. George!” The Battle of Agincourt is decided, as is the hand in marriage of a French princess to a certain English King. One of the most profound and personal meditations on power, Shakespeare's Henry V is the ultimate -- maybe even the original -- underdog war story.

Mother Courage and Her Children is a scathing critique of profiteering through war and misfortune. As relevant today as when it was written, the drama follows a woman determined to make her living from war at any cost. Over the course of the play, she loses all three of her children to the very war from which she tried to profit. This production at The Lab Theater in Minneapolis features a diverse ensemble, and presents a fresh perspective on this traditionally Euro-centric piece. Exposing the oft-unrecognized impacts of war on women, LGBTQ2A+, and indigenous, black and brown bodies, this work uplifts these voices, and empowers artists to connect to their own truth in this historical text.

Come and experience the final show produced by Ghost Light Theatricals, in the newly minted Copious space in Ballard. After a decade of residency at the formerly known Ballard Underground, this production culminates the vision of Ghost Light's 15 years of productions producing modern adaptations of classical stories. The Salem Witch Orgasms by Alexandra Davis (Winner of Battle of the Bards XII; The Final Battle) presents a comedic view into the lives of American women in the Puritanical Northeast. Stylistically a mashup of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Mel Brooks and The Princess Bride, this frank, hilarious and sex-positive representation of female-identifying sexuality will have you gasping for breath from laughter. As tween boy Given learns about his family history from his sexually liberated hippie Grandma Carol, the story borrows the framework of William Goldman's The Princess Bride to plunge into the experiences of a group of women identified as witches because they explored that most forbidden and misunderstood of fruits: the mysterious and alluring female orgasm. At times ridiculous, filled with large scale song and dance numbers, and relevant to our modern cultural fixation with purity, this show will tickle more than your funny bone *eyebrows* *eyebrows.*

This sophisticated 1938 musical broke new ground with its fizzy combo of comedy and snappy dance numbers by none other than George Balanchine, not to mention its heavenly score. I Married an Angel follows the adventures of a lovelorn banker, who's fed up with his girlfriend's shenanigans and wishes he could have an angel for a wife -- but when his celestial desire actually appears on earth, her innocence and inability to fib get him into all kinds of unexpected trouble. Balanchine's soon-to-be-wife Vera Zorina headlined the original production and in the same spirit, director-choreographer Joshua Bergasse's production features his wife, Sara Mearns, who's making her musical-theater debut at the New York City Center after her acclaimed 2017 performance in Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes.

An aging king creates a succession plan that divides Britain between his three daughters. Requiring each child to flatter him in order to receive her gift, Lear is publicly embarrassed when his youngest, most beloved child refuses. Indignant, Lear disinherits her and splits the country between his two eldest daughters, setting off a chain of events that leads Britain into civil war and the retired king into exile and madness. The greatest tragedy in the English language, King Lear examines the often self-destructive relationships between parents and their children, the danger of absolute power to the human psyche, and the universal challenge of senility and providing care for our elders. Robert Jason Jackson (Broadway’s Aida, Quintessence’s Antigone and Mourning Becomes Electra) returns to Philadelphia as King Lear.

Red Hot Patriot is the story of the unsinkable Molly Ivins, the famously brassy newspaper columnist and best-selling author. A true Texas original, Ivins was a sharp-tongued wit who skewered the political establishment and the "good ol' boys" with her unforgettable humor and wisdom. Written by twin sisters, themselves longtime journalists, the play celebrates Ivins' courage and tenacity -- even when a complacent America wasn't listening. Meg Chamberlain is all smarts and sass as the red headed firebrand, recounting her political rants and personal reflections with a liberal dose of piss and vinegar. This production, at the Chapel Theater in Milwaukie, captures the spunky reporter's indomitable character by weaving personal anecdotes with her colorful take on national politics.

The first Broadway play written by an African-American woman, A Raisin in the Sun is a masterpiece that The New York Times credits with changing American theater forever. First produced in 1959 and adapted two years later into a now-classic film starring Sidney Poitier, A Raisin in the Sun is as powerful today as it was 50 years ago. Now Harlem Repertory Theatre presents the limited return of this incredible story to their stage -- a story that follows the Youngers, an African-American family attempting to move from a crowded two-bedroom apartment into a "white" neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. But a new house is just one of the Youngers' many dreams. Three generations each yearn for different versions of a better life -- whether it's a business, or a spouse, or the right to live with long-denied dignity.

The winner of eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical), Spring Awakening explores the journey through adolescence with poignancy and passion. It examines morality and sexual politics while unapologetically plumbing the depths of the hormonal teenage psyche in a way that feels both fresh and all too familiar. This landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of sex, rock 'n' roll, and 1890s Germany.

Want to get away but lack the time or money? This daylong tour "takes you away" to all the best that Los Angeles has to offer. Explore on foot and by public transit as you get a feel for what it really means to live in Los Angeles. Sure, you'll see all the tourist musts like the Hollywood sign, Rodeo Drive and Venice Beach, but you'll also visit a hidden garden oasis on Hollywood Boulevard, learn about film and television history at a local media museum, and take a bike ride along the Pacific Ocean's famous beach path. Locals know that the best lunch to be had isn't in a fancy restaurant, but at the Farmers Market, which is a historic landmark that's been running continuously since 1934. You'll grab lunch from one (or more) of the plethora of food vendors before heading to a bakery and then on to a stroll along the glamorous Rodeo Drive. By the end of this 8-hour guided adventure, you'll come away feeling like you've gotten away -- and having a new appreciation for this wonderful city.
Heath Ledger singing Franki Valli with a marching band, a baby-faced Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Julia Stiles' teary-eyed monologue -- there are plenty of things to love in 10 Things I Hate About You, making it the perfect cult teen comedy to get the UMPO Series treatment at Rockwell: Table & Stage. Featuring L.A.-based actors and singers from TV, film and Broadway, The Unauthorized Musical Parody of 10 Things I Hate About You is a cheeky, song-filled parody that'll have you swimming in '90s nostalgia.

With just hours until opening night of the comic farce, Nothing On, an amateur theater troupe still has plenty of work to be performance-ready. Between mistaken props, forgotten lines, inner-cast discord, and a torrent of awful acting, one can't help but wonder if these eager thespians can successfully make it to the stage, or will they end up running around with their pants (quite literally) at their ankles? Presented in three acts, Noises Off typically features a revolving stage that rotates to show audiences the front and back of a theater. For this production, to bring guests closer to the humor onstage (and off), the audience can move around and see the action from all angles. Returning to Chicago's Windy City Playhouse to create this experience is the duo behind the uniquely intimate setup of 2017's Becky Shaw: Director Scott Weinstein and Scenic Designer Jeffrey D. Kmiec.

Gatsby in Paris: French Chansons & Jazz Standards From the '20s to the '40s, featuring enchanting French singer Chloé Perrier and her new band, the French Heart Jazz Band. This irrepressibly charming show is a mix of French chansons and American jazz standards from the '20s to the '40s with a continental flare. Chloé sings an intriguing mix of jazz, chanson, Brazilian and occasionally Romany-tinged numbers in French, as well as in English. The group is known for its reinvention of the old chestnut "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" as a bolero-tinged Twin Peaks theme, an obscure '20s hot jazz tune that Perrier had found in a history book, and the classic "La Vie en Rose." Come to Club Bonafide in New York City and listen as exes get dissed and relationships gone wrong are dissected and remembered through glasses that aren't exactly rose-colored.

From executive producers Viola Davis and Julius Tennon, Paradise follows the story of an inner city Yemeni-American Muslim high school senior, and her culturally naïve science teacher, a former Columbia neuroscientist -- and atheist -- who had a fall from grace and is forced to teach in the public schools. The play explores their growing relationship as he helps her, if at first reluctantly, gain admission to a competitive college science program. It asks provocative questions about the often-conflicting issues of love, faith, science and culture, and wonders: can we find Paradise here on this earth? See this timely new drama at Matrix Theatre in Los Angeles.

It's Art Basel, Miami's weeklong party for the rich and famous, where socialite darling Julie reigns over the blowout her real-estate mogul father is throwing at his South Beach hotel. But when her fiancé dumps her in front of the crowd, Julie hides from her humiliation (and her father) in the hotel’s barely used storage kitchen. Her companions are Christine, a cocktail waitress who recently fled conflict-torn Venezuela, and Christine’s fiancé John, an Uber driver from the Miami slums. This explosive elixir of power, class and immigration status is a bold and contemporary take on Strindberg’s Miss Julie by vibrant rising voice Hilary Bettis (The Americans). A strong argument could be made that Oliver! is one of the most engaging and delightful musicals ever written. In fact, we'll make it. But don't let all that delight fool you, because this tale also travels down some dark pathways, putting its characters through the narrative wringer. Charles Dickens' unforgettable characters are brought to vivid new life in this lively, heel-kicking classic about an innocent orphan thrown into the dark world of double-dealing thieves and con men of 19th-century London. Overflowing with jubilant songs like "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two," "Consider Yourself," "I'd Do Anything" and "Food, Glorious Food," this Davis Musical Theatre Company production of Oliver! serves up a musical feast for the eyes and ears that'll have you calling out for "More!" at Jean Henderson Performing Arts.

However, and with no thanks to the bumbling police inspector who snowshoes in to investigate, the mystery is solved in the nick of time and the "Slasher" unmasked--but not before the audience has been treated to a sidesplitting good time and a generous serving of the author's biting, satiric and refreshingly irreverent wit.

Inspired by the unknown dancer at the heart of Edgar Degas’ work, this all-new musical paints a colorful portrait of the real-life person behind the masterpiece. Play On! is a play-within-a-play comedy where everything that can go wrong does. This is the hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play (Murder Most Foul) in spite of maddening interference from a haughty authoress who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show; Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is the actual performance in which anything that can go wrong does. Don't miss Oil Lamp Theater's production in Glenview.

Boston has long had a lively stand-up comedy scene. With sardonic wit and hilarious self-deprecation, greats like Denis Leary, Steven Wright and Lenny Clarke have made the city one of the best spots to catch truly funny stand-up acts. The quick-witted Clarke, who notably portrayed Uncle Teddy in the FX hit series Rescue Me and narrated the ESPN 30 for 30 on the 2004 comeback of the Boston Red Sox, has a conversational, deceptively genial delivery onstage. Don't miss him when he hits the stage at Beverly's Larcom Theatre.
Fans of Drunk History and all its slurred infotainment will fall over laughing at Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare, where an entirely serious Shakespeare play is performed with one entirely inebriated cast member. For the last several years, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare has been performed from the darkest corners and diviest bars in the U.K. to sold-out runs at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals. Whether they're spontaneously belting out the Dawson's Creek theme song or embracing the occasional wardrobe malfunction, you never know what inebriated inspiration might strike these thespians during this side-splitting, raucous and interactive show. So, brush up on thy Bard knowledge, and get thee to the Village Theatre in Atlanta for a drunken twist on Romeo and Juliet, because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before.

Parents are hard enough to get along with. Sometimes yours might feel like they’re from another planet – or at least another country. Of course, for many second-generation Americans, that’s exactly the case. Nobody’s captured this one-two combo of cultural and generational differences better than Amy Tan in her beloved best-seller The Joy Luck Club, which tells the story of four older Chinese-American women and their complex relationships with their American-born daughters. Now, Tan’s novel comes to the stage of Concord's Umbrella Center for the Arts for a poignant look at how the bonds of family can overcome all.

The Nora Theatre Company presents Photograph 51 at Central Square Theatre. In 1951, British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin became a research associate at King's College in London. It was her X-ray imaging that revealed DNA's double helix structure, leading to the 1962 Nobel Prize, which went to James Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins. Told with wit and urgency by a chorus of scientists who relive the competitive chase to be the first to map the DNA molecule, Photograph 51 is the story of a fiercely independent and ambitious young scientist and her unsung, trailblazing achievements. It also provides an unflinching look at sexism, ethics and scientific collaboration.

In a world where people struggle to have children, one American couple decides to "un-adopt" their young Korean son because they have a newborn at home. After an internet chat room search for the right family, the father "re-homes" the boy with a lesbian couple, where one half is desperate for a child and the other half is fighting for her career. As the boy -- who thinks he’s a wolf, but is really a puppet -- adjusts to his new life, he forms bonds with the unlikeliest of culprits while the rest of the adults squabble about what is "best for the child." Wolf Play is a messy, funny, and moving theatrical experience that grapples with where family allegiance lies. See Wolf Play at Artists Repertory Theatre.

Called by playwright Edward Albee "the greatest American play ever written," this dramatization of small-town life has been adored by audiences ever since its debut. Performed by high-school aged actors, it's the story of young lovers George and Emily -- as well as their families, friends and neighbors -- as they grow up, fall in love and discover the inevitable darker sides of life in Grover's Corners. Narrated by the nameless Stage Manager and performed with minimal props or set, this groundbreaking play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1938. Don't miss Wilder's classic illustration of the value of appreciating life's small moments.

Landmark Musical Theatre's re-imagined revival of Evita remains totally faithful to the words and music of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, while giving it a fresh and unusual setting. An Argentine guerrilla theatrical group gathers in a dusty Buenos Aires tango bar, exactly 20 years after the death of their patron, Eva Duarte Peron, to celebrate her life by reenacting it for you, the invited audience. Her story unfolds, from her beginnings as a poor teenager to her success as a radio/film star to becoming the most powerful woman in Latin America as the wife of Argentine President Juan Peron, before her untimely death at the age of 33. This more intimate version of the show at The Shelton's off-Broadway-like Main Stage in San Francisco, with seating for just 72, puts you close to the action and offers you an unprecedented opportunity to connect with each character in this masterpiece of musical theater. The classic score features some of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's biggest hits, including "On This Night of A Thousand Stars," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and of course, the signature song of the show, "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," all performed, as always at Landmark, with live music.
