Igor Stravinsky hit music like a thunderclap. With Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913), he sent shockwaves that continue to ripple through music today. Driven, frenetic and strikingly original, each score is as unique in character as it is wondrous. Hear these seminal works at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas and Stravinsky's Violin Concerto played by the "rapturously lyrical" (The Guardian) Leonidas Kavakos.

Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. Beloved for penning such classics as "You've Got a Friend" and "I Feel the Earth Move," she fought her way into the record business as a teenager and ultimately flourished, writing hits for some of the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. Beautiful is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that Beautiful - The Carole King Musical won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. A resounding success on Broadway, this unforgettable show now returns to Hollywood's Pantages Theatre after a hit run in 2016.
West Side Story's got music by Bernstein, lyrics by Sondheim, choreography by Robbins and a book by Arthur Laurents (with a little help from William Shakespeare). In West Side Story, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to mid-century Manhattan where young lovers Tony and Maria are caught between warring street gangs. Their story and the songs that define them are American classics. You only need to hear numbers like "America," "I Feel Pretty" or "Maria" once and you'll never forget them. See this bold new production of a legendary musical at Phoenix Theatre.

Is there a more goosebump-raising romantic song than Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's "Falling Slowly?" You might say yes, but then you might have to come to blows to defend that position against the song's legion of devotees. It did, after all, inspire an Oscar-winning movie, Once, (also starring the real-life musical duo) and a multiple-Tony-winning Broadway musical. Once the musical is a poignant ode to love, longing and the power of art, and now it comes to the stage at Dallas' Theatre Three. A talented cast of actor-musicians play their own instruments as they bring to life Hansard and Irglova's bittersweet songs, and the beautiful story they inspired.
"Four Women" is one of the most blistering works by artist-activist Nina Simone -- a musical indictment of racial prejudice and attitudes as explored through the experiences of four black women. Featuring some of Simone's most popular Civil Rights-era anthems such as "Mississippi Goddam," "Go Limp," and "Young, Gifted, and Black," this production at Atlanta's Southwest Arts Center is a portrait of an artist striving to enact change through her work.

Frankenstein is the world's most iconic Gothic nightmare. It started on a cold, wet night in 1816, when Mary Shelley first dreamed of a "hideous phantasm," a man patched together from the parts of other men. And for 200 years, that same Creature has continued to lurch and lumber through countless more night-terrors, not to mention books, plays and movies -- his bone-chilling step never halting in two centuries. Come celebrate the 200th birthday of one of the greatest horror stories ever told, Mary Shelley's timely tale of humanity's obsession with knowledge and of the unintended consequences of scientific innovation, when Frankenstein lurches onto the stage of Philadelphia's Sedgwick Theater.

But stay on your toes because the Headless Horseman may come thundering by at any moment on his real-life steed. And if the thought of things going bump in the night is just too much for you to handle, the Serenbe Playhouse is offering some decidedly less-scary daytime performances, suitable for the whole family. Come early for a Fall Festival, complete with a pumpkin patch, pumpkin decorating, s'mores making, fall games and more.

Fantasy and reality become tangled in a dark web in this smash musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the songwriting team that penned Chicago and Cabaret. Kiss of the Spider Woman was the winner of seven Tony Awards in 1993, including Best Musical. It's the story of two cellmates in a Latin American prison -- Valentin, a Marxist revolutionary, and Molina, a gay window dresser. Molina survives his jailers' torture and humiliation by escaping to a fantasy world filled with the movies he loved as a child, conjuring a beautiful and beguiling screen enchantress named Aurora as his imaginary diva. As the relationship between Valentin and Molina becomes increasingly more complicated, so too do Molina's over-the-top fantasies, which begin encroaching upon -- and threatening to overtake -- his real life. Penned by four-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally, this powerful story comes to life at the Lyric Stage Company in Boston.

"Joy and fury," Florence Welch reveals, are what propelled her to pen the latest Florence + The Machine album, High as Hope. In a way, joy and fury have always been vital to Florence + The Machine's singular sound: bombastic, soaring anthems that are somehow both deeply emotional and infectiously buoyant at the same time. After a string of hit singles like "Dog Days Are Over" and "Shake It Out," and a few whirlwind years of touring rife with, as Welch describes it, "the parties and the video shoots and the madness" that worldwide success brought, she's found new joy in getting back in the studio to record some of the most ambitious, most heartbreaking, most impossible-not-to-dance-along-to songs of her career. (Need proof? Just take the soulful lead single "Hunger" for a spin.) With the dog days of summer finally over, now's your chance to experience all this joy and fury live as Florence + The Machine perform under the stars at L.A.'s iconic Hollywood Bowl.

Harris, a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, has performed and recorded with greats like B.B. King and Keb' Mo'. He'll share the bill with renowned roots musician Davis, the son of activists and cinematic legends Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. Both musicians were prominently featured in Martin Scorcese's The Blues: A Musical Journey, in which Davis embarked on a journey to explore his West African musical roots. Each will perform an individual set before joining together in song.

Winner of the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony, You Can't Take It With You is a madcap comedy about two clashing New York families. When a member of the conservative Kirby family falls in love with a girl from the eccentric Vanderhof household, the two families come together to celebrate the couple's engagement and discover their shocking differences over a wildly uncomfortable dinner discussion. Written by masters of comedy George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, this fast-paced, witty classic has been entertaining audiences for over 70 years. Don't miss Spotlight Theatre Company's production at the John Hand Theater in Denver.
The Light Opera of Portland, in keeping with its custom of absurdity done in complete sincerity, presents Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado. The Mikado opened on the London stage in 1885 and immediately became a world sensation. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that in Europe and America at least 150 companies were producing the opera. What's more though is that LOoP has decided to go with Gilbert's original intention and to present it in a distant, far-distant locale. Theirs is the small planet of Pitiyu in the constellation of Zhartan that disguises his satire of British government. It is the traditional classic comic opera that has tickled the funny bone of audiences for 133 years. Come enjoy the beautiful Sullivan melodies sung by the fabulous voices of LOoP and laugh your way through this hysterically funny comedy in its new distant and far-distant setting.

A new comedy musical is coming to Chicago: Tootsie. Based on the movie the American Film Institute calls "one of the funniest movies of all time," Tootsie is the story of a talented, but difficult-to-work-with actor who will do anything to land the role of a lifetime. Starring Tony nominee Santino Fontana (Cinderella, the film Frozen), this new production features a score by Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band's Visit, The Full Monty), a book by Robert Horn (13, Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance), choreography by Tony nominee Denis Jones (Holiday Inn, Honeymoon in Vegas), and direction by eight-time Tony nominee and Olivier Award winner Scott Ellis (She Loves Me, On the Twentieth Century). Tootsie will play a pre-Broadway engagement at the Cadillac Palace Theatre before opening on Broadway in Spring 2019.

This loving tribute and send-up takes audiences through a laughter-infused version of all six seasons of the beloved show. TJ Dawe (director and co-creator of One Man Star Wars Trilogy, One Man Lord of the Rings and PostSecret: The Show) has comedic whirling dervish Kerry Ipema (PostSecret: The Show) bringing all our favorite characters to life as they brunch, banter, argue, support each other and swoon over men and Manolos. There will be puns, cosmopolitans and audience participation. For anyone who remembers the naked dress, the tantric sex demonstration, the post-it note, and "he's just not that into you," One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody of Love, Friendship and Shoes will provide a great reminder of why this series and its characters have stayed so firmly in women's hearts and minds. See it at The Theater Center in NYC.
A lawyer hires an actor to help him recount to family and friends the troubling events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood where her illegitimate child was accidentally killed. Anyone who sees her dies! The lawyer has invited some friends to watch as he and the actor re-create the events of that dark and stormy night. A classic of the genre. "A real theatrical spine-chiller...A truly nerve-shredding experience" (The Daily Mail), The Woman In Black comes to The Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater and Children's Theater.

The Thin White Duke left behind a giant black hole in the rock firmament when he passed in 2016, but the void was felt especially deeply by members of his touring group -- including his longest-serving bandmate, jazz pianist Mike Garson. "The music we shared through the years is eternal and so is David," he wrote after Bowie's death, and he puts that sentiment into action through this amazing live tour, performing an ever-changing and rotating mix of fan favorites and deep cuts. Joined by fellow alumni Earl Slick, Mark Plati, Gerry Leonard and Carmine Rojas, Garson and A Bowie Celebration let loose with their authentic-as-it-gets salute with help from guest vocalists like Latin Grammy-winner Gaby Moreno, Rolling Stones backing vocalist Bernard Fowler and Living Colour's Corey Glover. "The celebration is an extremely well-executed display of musicality and a touching tribute to a well-loved rock god," says The Daily Californian. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind concert experience at Mountain Winery in Saratoga.

Fans of Drunk History and all its slurred education will fall over laughing at Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare, which combines an entirely serious Shakespeare play with one completely inebriated cast member. For the last six years, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare has been performed in the darkest corners and diviest bars in the U.K., and the cast is bringing the good time to Austin. Side-splitting, raucous and completely interactive, the show is fresh off sell-out runs at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals, where a cast member drinks beer, wine and whiskey on stage, drunkenly sings the Dawson's Creek theme song and occasionally (accidentally, of course) bares a nipple or two. Brush up on your Bard knowledge, and head down to The Rockwell near Boston for The Taming of the Shrew, because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before.

With careful deliberation, Strawberry Theatre Workshop has elected to change its fall production to Craig Lucas' Prelude to a Kiss. The new title will feature the same core artistic team behind Reckless. Like Reckless, Prelude is a comic fantasy that serves as an allegory for deeper issues. The story centers around a newlywed husband, Peter (Sieber), who has to consider whether his beautiful young wife (Higham) has changed bodies with a terminally ill septuagenarian (Osier) on their honeymoon. Peter must discover if his love for his partner transcends the sudden loss of physical beauty and vitality. It was written as a response to the ravages of AIDS. See it at 12th Ave Arts Seattle.

William Shakespeare had one son: Hamnet. The young boy never knew his famous father, but in this riveting tour-de-force from Ireland, Shakespeare's only son finally takes center stage. How do our dreams impact our families? Do adults really have it all figured out? Or, are we blind to what we could have done better until it's too late? In Hamnet, a commanding performance from a young actor confronts what it means -- and what it costs -- to be great. In this moving, meticulous, multimedia wonder, ambition clashes with family responsibilities in a way that rivals the stakes of a great Shakespearean tragedy. See Hamnet at Emerson Paramount Center in Boston.

Jeffrey Swann, internationally renowned pianist and storyteller extraordinaire, presents The Intimate Side of Wagner. Swann will play the Quintet from Die Meistersinger, perhaps the most magically intimate moment in all of Wagner's music. To contrast, he'll also play works by Chopin, Liszt, Berg and Debussy that both anticipate and recall Wagner -- sometimes with near quotes. In the words of critic Donald Isler, Jeffrey Swann is "a natural born entertainer as well as a very fine pianist. Before playing each work, he picks up the microphone and tells stories about the composer he is about to play, the works themselves, or both. His comments are informal, informative and anything but dry and academic." See him live in concert at American University's Katzen Arts Center in Washington, D.C.

Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic follows the (non)-adventures of a wizard named Wayne, his two somewhat familiar friends and the lovably underachieving members of a particular house, who are left to sit on the sidelines as a certain star student and his pals experience all the evil-battling excitement. This "alternative narrative for the underdog" (The Wall Street Journal) gives the magically-challenged Wayne his own hilariously heroic seven-year journey, in a show The New York Times says "exudes a joyful, winking fondness for all things Harry." Muggle-born and others are invited to check out the show at its new home at New York's New World Stages.

During this lightning-paced performance, Jons astonishes the audience with his Sherlockian style of people-reading, his Svengali-like powers to persuade and, of course, his incredible ability to seemingly read the thoughts of total strangers. But the show's highlight is the dazzling variety of psychic readings that Jons does, instantly and memorably, for lucky spectators. Be there for what NewTimes declared "one of the best date nights of all time."

Before there was Hamilton, there was In the Heights. The brilliance of Lin-Manuel Miranda's new vision of American musical theater -- in all its blow-the-top-off-expectations exuberance -- is spectacularly realized in both shows. Like Hamilton, In the Heights' style is ostensibly hip-hop, but characters sing and dance to a wide variety of musical styles and moods. Energetic and infectious, the show tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood -- a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It's a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. In the Heights is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. Enjoy this high-energy production at the Mysterium Theater at The La Habra Depot Playhouse.

Contrasting the delicate elegance of Mozart is Tchaikovsky's deeply romantic First Piano Concerto performed by Drew Peterson, praised for his commanding and poetic interpretations. This program from The Phoenix Symphony opens with waltz-king Johann Strauss' Emperor Waltz.

Dubbing themselves "the West Coast Home of the Blues," the venue fully embraces the culture and music. On stage, you'll see regional and national touring artists cranking out everything from zydeco to honky-tonk to roots and Americana. Meanwhile, the venue itself is studded with "old timey" touches like a 34-foot bar made from antique doors and blue velvet benches collected from an old Masonic Temple. The walls are covered with photos snapped by some of the country's best blues photographers. And to round out the juke joint experience, the kitchen pumps out Southern-style comfort food -- think jambalaya and chicken gumbo -- while the bar whips up cocktails named for blues legends like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.
